Liverpool John Lennon Airport is a North West England regional airport. The CAA Public Use Aerodrome License Number is P735. When the Second World War broke out, the airport was run by the RAF and was known as the RAF Speke. The airport is within the City of Liverpool, on the shores of the River Mersey estuary, about 6.5 nautical miles (12.0 km; 7.5 mi) southeast of the city center. Initially identified as Speke Airport, the hub was dubbed by the Liverpudlian singer John Lennon of the Beatles in 2001. Scheduled international, European, and North African flights take place at the airport.
Around 1997 and 2007, the airport was one of the largest rising airports in Europe, rising annual passenger numbers from 689,468 in 1997 to 5,47 million in 2007. Despite the decline in traffic volumes to just over 4.8 million in 2016, that was 11.1 percent higher than the 2015 figure, rendering it the 12th busiest airport in the United Kingdom. The airport handled 4,95 million passengers in 2017, a rise of 3% over 2016. The airport served well over 5 million travelers in 2018.
